Matthew Schellhorn at the piano during his recital at St Nicholas Church, Harwich

On Wednesday 1st July Matthew Schellhorn gave a top class piano recital at St Nicholas Church, Harwich.  The first half of the recital followed a theme based around birds, which was very appropriate considering the seaside setting of the venue, built so close to the old port at Harwich.

Highlights of the recital included Mozart’s classic Sonata in C and Chopin’s spectacular Ballade No. 4, both of which were delivered with a great variety of colour.  This was a most enjoyable recital given by a truly talented musician and was an absolute pleasure to see and hear.  I do so hope to be able to see Matthew perform at the Festival again next year!

The event was arranged by Harwich Music Festival as part of their free lunch time concert series. Tickets for the remaining concerts are still available for this coming weekend. There is plenty to see over the weekend with a variety of concerts and performances yet to come.

Musical theatre recital

On Wednesday 1st July we enjoyed a wonderful performance at St Nicholas’ Church, Harwich as part of a series of free lunch time concerts. The concert which was part of the Harwich Festival, showcased the talents of Colchester based mezzo soprano Lisa Roberts, who delivered a polished and well rounded programme of musical theatre songs, accompanied by Daniel Law on the piano.

Lisa was joined by young singer Maia Elsey, who at just 16 is already an accomplished performer. There really was something for everyone to enjoy with a variety of songs including ‘Maybe this time’, ‘Secret love’, Don’t cry for me Argentina’ and ‘On my own’ from Les Miserables. What a great way to spend a summer lunch time by the sea!

The Harwich Festival still has so much to offer this weekend. Why not check out the Street  Show this Saturday:  Harwich Festival Street Show or see their events page for details of the remaining live events at their whats on page

Out of the Shadows

The Out of the Shadows programme

The Fieri Consort – Harwich Festival 2015

On Tuesday 30th June, as part of the Harwich Festival, we were treated to an evening of music presented by the Fieri Consort at St Michael’s Church, Ramsey. This small group formed in 2012 are all alumni of Harry Christophers’ Genesis Sixteen programme, which was set up to train the next generation of talented ensemble singers.

The current programme – ‘Out of the Shadows’ is an exploration of the concept of transgression and humanity’s journey towards redemption, offering up a variety of music ranging from Byrd through to Lassus, Gesuldo and Macmillan.

It really was an absolute pleasure to listen to this group of young singers performing unaccompanied and unconducted, with their voices ringing around the church on a lovely summer evening. The quality of singing was outstanding throughout the performance, even though the consort were a man short due to one of the bass singers being unwell. The encore performance of ‘O Radiant Dawn’ by Macmillan was superb, making the perfect end to a most enjoyable evening.
